Gonabad Saffron registered in FAO cultural heritage

Rome, Dec 22, IRNA – Gonabad saffron production system which is based on Qanat has been registered as 55th system of agricultural heritage by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

It was the third agricultural heritage of Iran which has been registered in FAO.

Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems” (GIAHS) has started work since 2002 aiming to introduce and protect world agriculture heritage.

Iran’s permanent representative to FAO Mohammad Hossein Emadi has described registering Iranian saffron as a big privilege saying first it will add credit to Iranian saffron and second the farmers and producers have the main benefit.

Earlier, Member of saffron national council Ali Hosseini said from 430 tons of saffron in the world 400 tons are produced in Iran.

Iran exports saffron to 50 countries out of 180 ones in the world, Ali Hosseini said.
